Sensing the tension, Stella reached for his hand. “It was an accident,” she reassured him, her voice strained. “Don’t worry about it.”
Matthew’s anger simmered.
He couldn’t shake the feeling that Haley was somehow involved, but for now, he pushed it down.
“You should go,” he said curtly to Haley. “I’ll stay with Stella.”
Without a word, Haley nodded and hurried out.
Stella watched her leave, a pang of guilt twisting in her stomach.
She turned back to Matthew, her voice laced with concern. “You scared her with your yelling. It wasn’t her fault.”
Matthew sighed, pulling her into a hug. “I’m the one to blame, I should have been here. I’ll find whoever did this.”
Stella shook her head. “It’s done. Finding them won’t heal my hand any faster.”

Her eyes drifted down to the bandaged limb. “Now I’m worried about Bella’s exam.”
Matthew squeezed her shoulder. “I can help with that.”
“You?” Stella’s eyes widened in surprise.
Matthew reminded her, “Don’t forget, I’m a designer too. As long as you have the ideas, I can explain them to Bella over email. We’ll figure it out.”
Stella had to stay at the hospital, and Matthew kept her company.
